Large-scale displacements following the 2017 drought, rural-urban migration trends, and voluntary or involuntary return migration from neighboring countries and other parts of the world have accelerated urbanization in Somalia. The Benadir Region and in specific, Mogadishu, hosts the largest portion of those displaced with over 500,000 of the 2.1 million internally displaced in the country (over 60% of the displaced population are under the age of 18).
